On TV3 'Sunrise' breaky news I saw one of the Home of the Year Finalists . An amazing $153,000 budget home in Mangere was tailor-made with a lot of imagination, quirky details, personality, use of off-cuts.... competing against houses worth millions! It was described as having 'a real spirit in the place'.
Of course we all know that 'money (spent on a house) is no guarantee of soul'. So what is it that makes a house a home? Someone once said, 'Home is where our story begins.' Another 'Home is where the heart is.' Greg Dixon, in Canvas Magazine in the Weekend Herald (July 11 2009) said, 'My home has been engineered so it serves not only as a dwelling but as, for want of a better way to describe it, the spiritual centre of my world.'
Our own home is nothing extra special but it is ours and it is the place that our family has dwelt the longest after many years of a rather nomadic existence! So it is full of memories...

Mum I think it was you who made our house a home. I have so many fond childhood memories that you helped create... of baking, tea parties with raisins and water?! Making pretend fish and chips with white bread and crust chips, you making jelly, home haircuts and lots of brushing, being kept quiet and amused while dad was sleeping in the morning after milking, snuggles in your bed, all of us, so you'd end up out! Lots of reading, birthday cakes, lemonade and toast for tummy bugs, hanging out washing, hand sewing, knitting, cross stitch lessons, ironing tutorials etc etc. All of these things had no particular link to where we happened to be living, but you were the constant. Yes your/our home has always been clean and tidy with food on the table, but the unconditional love and security that you and dad have provided has made it home. Now we all have our own homes, thank you for the example and memories of 'home' wherever we were.
ReplyDeleteThank you darling girl! You lovely girls have certainly made our home very special and happy and fun and enjoyable!!! Your visits still brighten our day too! Love you lots xoxox
ReplyDeleteNice Sez (I'm guessing),I totally agree. From my recent experiences travelling I've decided that home is somewhere where, along with all the other things, you can feel good, and comfortable. You can go to bed and feel safe and sleep well. You know the roads that lead to it, and you feel better and better the closer you get to it. I now have a couple more homes than I used to, and that's special. Erica
ReplyDeleteI like that description of home Duzzy!!!! NICE!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Great to have multiple 'homes' around the world too - 'significant other' places where you feel good and comfortable. I'm sure that has a lot to do with you being such an enjoyable 'guest'. Love you lots xoxox
